In laminated smart glass, the PDLC switchable layer is laminated between glass at the factory. The panel arrives as finished switchable glazing, the privacy layer is protected inside the glass rather than applied to its surface, and is installed like architectural glass.
That makes it the format to specify when glazing is being designed or replaced: new construction, remodels, new partitions, doors, and enclosures. If your existing glass is staying in place, retrofit switchable film is usually the better route.

Usually it is the easier path. Retrofit film and interior laminated panels change the interior side of the glazing, and in the clear state the glass reads as it did before, so there is typically no change to the exterior character under review.
