Miami residential is glass by default: floor-to-ceiling tower units in Brickell and Sunny Isles, waterfront houses in the Grove and on Key Biscayne, and balconies close enough that the neighboring unit is the view. Curtains on that glazing are the first thing owners want gone.
Switchable glass gives the unit privacy without covering the opening. Because both formats are interior-side, they do not alter the exterior glazing, its impact assembly or its seals: an important distinction in a market where the exterior glass is engineered to code and to the building standard. Laminated smart panels are used for interior partitions and enclosures rather than as a substitute for code-rated exterior glazing.
Switchable smart glass is built around a PDLC layer. Polymer dispersed liquid crystal. With power applied, the crystals align and light passes straight through: the glass reads as ordinary clear glazing. Switch the power off, and the crystals scatter light, turning the glass private. The change takes under a second, with no moving parts and nothing to open or close.
A wall switch, remote, app, or building control system operates the glass: including multi-zone control, so different panels or rooms switch independently. Privacy becomes part of the architecture instead of something bolted onto it.

No. Retrofit film and interior laminated panels are interior-side assemblies and are not a replacement for code-rated exterior glazing. The existing impact assembly, seals and coatings stay as engineered and as approved by the building.
