Valley architecture puts long uninterrupted glazing toward Camelback, the Superstitions and the McDowells. Those elevations also take direct sun for most of the year, and the standard answer has been motorized shades that fail, fade and hum along an entire glass wall.
Switchable glass removes the hardware from the opening. Privacy becomes electrical rather than mechanical, so a 30-foot elevation switches in one action with nothing hanging in front of the view. Note the distinction: PDLC glass is a privacy product, not a solar-control product. Where heat load is the real problem we plan it alongside the low-e or shading strategy rather than instead of it.
Switchable smart glass is built around a PDLC layer. Polymer dispersed liquid crystal. With power applied, the crystals align and light passes straight through: the glass reads as ordinary clear glazing. Switch the power off, and the crystals scatter light, turning the glass private. The change takes under a second, with no moving parts and nothing to open or close.
A wall switch, remote, app, or building control system operates the glass: including multi-zone control, so different panels or rooms switch independently. Privacy becomes part of the architecture instead of something bolted onto it.
